1. Write the numbers you wish to multiply, like so
7 x 9 =
2. Under each number write its distance from 10 in a circle, like so
7 x 9 =
(3) (1)
3. Subtract diagonally. Either 7 - 1 or 9 - 3 will give the same result - 6. This is the first half of the answer.
7 x 9 = 6
(3) (1)
4. Now multiply the circled numbers (3) x (1) = 3. This is the second half of the answer.
7 x 9 = 63
(3) (1)
Works for any number!
Let's try with
97 x 75
Painful, isn't it?
Not at all. Watch:
97 x 75 =
(3) (25)
This time we subtract the numbers from 100, not 10.
75 - 3 = 72
25 x 3 = 75
97 x 75 = 7,275
